THE JUDGES VIEWPOINT

For the Information of Competitors

Following many requests for information regarding judging criteria the following Notes have been prepared as a guide as to how the models are judged and the maximum number of points allotted to each of the following aspects.

  1. Overall Impression: Maximum Points 15
This is based on the impression the model makes when initially viewed – does it strike you as a tidy well built model and likely to have been accurately built.

  1. Documentation and Research: Maximum Points 5
(These notes do not apply to Kit class models unless significant alterations have been made). The points are awarded for the presentation alongside the model, of Plans, Drawings, Photographs of the prototype and Photographs of the model under construction. These help the Judges to make an accurate assessment of the model as presented. Contrary to some popular opinion, judges are human beings and do not know all things about all boats.

  1. Hull Construction: Maximum Points 15
Aspects judged include level of difficulty, workmanship and accuracy when compared with drawings’ photographs – parts of the superstructure NOT made by the competitor will result in a deduction of points.

  1. Authenticity of Deck: Maximum Points 5
Again, the provision of drawings and/or photographs allows for an accurate assessment of the deck layout – for example does the model show the correct laying and joint pattern of a planked deck!

  1. Detail: Maximum Points   20
This applies to the hundreds (or thousands!) of the small parts which are made and fitted to help produce an accurate model. Accuracy and degree of difficulty is assessed – no points are awarded for any purchased items utilised on the model.

  1. Finish: Maximum points 15
The overall quality, correctness of colour and appropriate finish (gloss, satin or matt) is assessed as is the accuracy and method of application of lining and other hull and superstructure markings (for example load lines, numbers etc..,).

  1. Fidelity to Scale: Maximum Points 10
All aspects of the model are assessed – for example, are ladder rungs spaced correctly, are navigation lights the correct size etc.
